Most people visit Sugarloaf Mountain by cable car. Very few ever experience the mountain from the inside, following its natural trails, climbing its rocky walls, and earning the summit through adventure.
Our CEPI Via Ferrata is a unique guided experience that combines hiking, scrambling, and protected climbing on one of Rio de Janeiro’s most iconic landmarks. Starting at Praia Vermelha, in the charming neighborhood of Urca, we’ll follow the beautiful Claudio Coutinho Trail along the coastline before entering the quieter and less-visited side of Sugarloaf Mountain.
As we leave the crowds behind, the city noise fades away and the real adventure begins.
We meet at the entrance of the Claudio Coutinho Trail, next to Praia Vermelha in the charming neighborhood of Urca. Here, you’ll meet your guide, receive a briefing about the activity, and have the opportunity to ask any questions before we begin.
Our adventure starts along the beautiful Claudio Coutinho Trail, following the coastline at the base of Sugarloaf Mountain. Partway through the hike, we’ll leave the main path and enter a less-traveled trail that leads us to the back side of Sugarloaf Mountain, where the climbing route begins.
At the base of the route, we take time to gear up with professional climbing equipment, including harnesses, helmets, and safety systems certified according to international standards. Your guide will explain the climbing techniques and safety procedures before the ascent begins.
The Via Ferrata begins with an exciting 10-meter aid-climbing section, followed by the first two pitches—the most technical and challenging parts of the route. After these sections, the climb becomes progressively easier, allowing you to relax, enjoy the views, and take photos along the way. Throughout the ascent, your guide will move at the group’s pace, making stops whenever needed to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
As we continue upward, the terrain gradually becomes less demanding, allowing more time to enjoy the experience and admire the breathtaking scenery. Throughout the climb, we make regular stops for rest, hydration, and photos at several spectacular viewpoints overlooking Rio de Janeiro, Copacabana, Christ the Redeemer, and the surrounding mountains.
When you’re ready, we’ll descend comfortably by the famous Sugarloaf cable car, enjoying one final perspective of Rio de Janeiro before returning to ground level. (not included R$60 tickets, but you also have the chance to take an esay trail to go down for free from Urca mountain)
